Our History

A Mojave Guides side project, Joshua Tree Leash and Lead began in 2021 as a solution to our growing retired climbing rope problem.

Every year, Mojave Guides retires many feet (thousands?) of climbing rope, usually due to one or two small damaged sections that render the entire rope unfit for climbing.

Throwing these ropes in the trash was never an option, so we considered recycling. Unfortunately, recycling required shipping the retired ropes back to their manufacturers, which gets expensive.

As the pile of ropes grew larger, we needed an in-demand product that could be produced efficiently and that we would enjoy making.

Inspired by a friend’s fundraising event for our local Humane Society’s no-kill animal shelter, we came up with a sustainable and satisfying solution - retired rope leashes and leads! Our durable retired climbing rope would be used to make beautiful, unique, long-lasting leashes and leads. Our product would not only help reduce the environmental impact of our rock climbing but also make positive contributions to our local community!

After a couple of years of design and development, we are proud to now offer what we think are the highest quality and most attractive leashes and leads available. Our products are handmade in Joshua Tree, with love and great attention to detail. We hope that you enjoy them as much as we do.
